What Is Farsightedness?

Farsightedness is a condition that is also known as hyperopia. It is a condition where a person can see distant objects without any problems, but close objects are blurry. Most people are born farsighted. This condition can also run in families.

Symptoms of Farsightedness

There are several symptoms that one may experience if he or she is farsighted. People who are farsighted may have to squint to see close objects. Eye strain, burning eyes, frequent headaches and aching eyes are some of the other symptoms of farsightedness. Children who are farsighted may have trouble reading. They may also not show any interest in reading.

How is Farsightedness Diagnosed?

A basic eye exam can reveal farsightedness. Your eye doctor can use various instruments to examine your eyes. Your doctor may also shine a bright light into your eyes. A slit lamp exam, tonometry and ophthalmoscopy are some of the vision tests that are a part of a standard eye exam.

Farsightedness Treatment

Some people that are farsighted may not need treatment. The eyes may be able to adjust to this problem. However, as you get older, your eyes may have more problems adjusting. That is why you may need to wear contacts or glasses.

It is important to note that farsightedness is not a disease. In fact, most people who are farsighted are healthy. The best thing that you can do if you are farsighted is to see your eye doctor regularly. Make sure that you let your eye doctor know if there have been any changes in your vision.
